HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY [LONG ISLAND, NY]

Situated on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, the Hofstra University Club is a venue for university functions, private events, and conferences.  Originally designed in 1991 by Oehme, Van Sweden, the design includes a sunken terrace and sloped planting beds.  Despite the efforts of the talented landscape team at Hofstra University, the landscape surrounding the University Club fell astray of its original design intent over the last three decades as tree canopies expanded, invasive plants spread, and the climate warmed.

Sedge was contracted to assess and survey the existing plant material, and develop a new landscape design and plant palette that pushes the University Club landscape towards a new paradigm of land care.  Selecting resilient native plants that will readily establish, using locally sourced stone and plantings to stabilize eroding hillsides, and developing a design that will last over time – all while enhancing the experience of guests to the Club.
